About the Owner

It started as a joke by her dad about owning so many house plants she could open a shop. But the fierce drive and entrepreneurial creativity of Kaitlyn Makers, Owner of Take Root, is no laughing matter. At the age of 25 and in the midst of a global pandemic, Kaitlyn decided she wanted to share the pure joy she derived from plant care with the Frederick community and beyond. So, with her dad’s almost prophetic words ringing true, Kaitlyn opened Take Root – a space where her passion for connecting to the natural world meets with her desire to provide a judgement-free gathering place for plant newbies and greenthumbs alike.

A long-time Frederick native and graduate of nearby Hood College, Kaitlyn’s own roots run deep in the local business community. Her family has owned and operated a shop in Frederick’s Everedy Square for many years, so she grew up in the evolving landscape of vibrant, one-of-a-kind businesses for which this area is recognized. She knew her shop needed to reflect this same hip and historic feel while also delivering an unparalleled house plant discovery experience, which is exactly what you’ll get when you visit.

Come stop by the shop, meet Kaitlyn, chat about plants, and ask her about her unapologetic love for old-school emo music and drunken spaghetti from Lazy Fish.
